Human Footprints in the Karst Landscape: The Influence of Lime Production on the Landscape of the Northern Dalmatian Islands (Croatia)

Throughout history, the production of lime on Croatian islands, which are mostly made limestone and dolomite, has been an important economic activity. In northern Dalmatian centrally positioned northeastern Adriatic coast, was produced for local needs, but also purposes construction in nearby cities Zadar Šibenik. On basis research into various written cartographic archival sources relating to spatial data, addition results field research, traces have found landscape islands. Indications this activity insular karst visible anthropogenic forms relief (lime kilns, small quarries, stone deposits) degraded Mediterranean vegetation. This left its mark linguistic form toponyms, indicating that kilns were part cultural landscape.
